It’s a sentiment I share. That’s exactly why I first ran for mayor back in 2007. At that time, our town’s politics had become as unproductive as anything we see today in Washington or Trenton.

My message then, as now: bring people together and work toward making our town better for everyone – not just Democrats, not just Republicans: everyone.

From day one, I looked for ways to improve our community, by identifying and prioritizing long neglected infrastructure needs and stimulating small business growth. I received millions of dollars in grant funding to modernize our rail crossings and improve pedestrian and vehicular safety, and reclaiming a municipal landfill to create 110 acres of active and passive recreation parkland. I worked to Protect our drinking water supply by remediating lead contamination, replacing leaky sewer lines, and reducing flood risks. Because senior citizens deserve a voice in how their town is run, I created Westwood’s first Senior Citizen Advisory Board.

When Pascack Valley Hospital closed its doors. I committed to the job of building support to reopen that hospital. Not many people believed it could get done. I recognized how critical that hospital was to the entire region – not just for the medical care it provided, but also the jobs and local businesses it supported. Cutting the ribbon on the new Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley was one of the proudest days in my public service.. We got there by earning overwhelming public support throughout the region, and working across the aisle to build a true bi-partisan coalition of state and local officials coming together to do something bigger and more important than any party label.

That’s exactly how my running mate Gerry Falotico and I are going to fight for our district in the Legislature. We’re dealing with neglected roads and bridges, a broken transit system, underfunded local schools, and toxic chemicals threatening our drinking water.

We need to recover from the legacy of Chris Christie’s refusal to confront the serious issues of gun violence, women’s healthcare, and climate change, aided by politicians like Bob Auth and Holly Schepisi who put party loyalty and ideology ahead of serving our communities. Families in North Jersey pay some of the highest taxes anywhere. But for all the money we send to Trenton, we aren’t getting nearly enough back into our district to meet our needs.

Well, if you want change in Trenton, you have to change the people you send to Trenton.Gerry and I are running on our records of bringing results to the communities we serve. I know that we can win this election by earning the support of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans.

Together we can help all the towns of the 39th district by: standing behind our teachers and first responders, caring for our seniors and veterans, supporting our small businesses, protecting our environment, and treating all people with dignity and respect – no matter their gender, their skin color, who they love, or how they pray.

In short, we can make our district the sort of place where all our kids will be proud to grow up." I have pride in my place. I was born, raised, and worked in the 4th Ward. I graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, New Jersey. I played football and was part of the team that won the 1979 Championship. I am a dedicated father of one daughter, Cortney and two young men, Kaelen and Kai. My fiancé, Monica Strickland is a lovely woman and supports me wholeheartedly.

After college, I worked with my father's construction company, "Wilson & Wilsons". During our decades in business, we built many homes throughout the city of Englewood and Bergen County. We employed hundreds of our neighbors. It is unfair to expect that the normalization of mediocrity and failure that has pervaded, persisted, and plagued us for years is going to dissipate in an instant—and we need to be forthright in our admission we have developed a culture of mediocrity and failure. Instead, we need a change of ethos that is the result of a shared desire for revolutionary change in our District.

For this, we must create strategic, mission-centered, data-driven plans, with benchmarks and dates, because we have very serious issues before us. No team wins without a firm mastery of the fundamentals.

The same is true with any subject matter. Acquisition of the foundational behaviors is critical to sustained success. Continuing with the metaphor, teams succeed when the members practice and perfect their crafts to the utmost of their abilities and work together for a common goal (pun intended).

In order for us as a school district to reroute from this unwelcome path, we need everyone to take ownership of tasks before us. We must admit readily that no one person has all the answers or abilities, and we must never be hesitant to seek the expertise of those who are knowledgeable and have proven track records.

Additionally, we must cease our uncritical acceptance of premises that are current falsehoods. The data show that some of our notions about the promise of the extant choice programs to elevate academic performance at the high school are, at best, inconclusive. This is not to suggest the elimination of choice programs, but to suggest a continuous review of their viability and purposes for our District and to develop data-driven benchmarks for them.

More than I can express here, I want THE Dwight Morrow High School to gleam academically. Because student performance does not occur in a vacuum, it is one of a myriad of components that need to be examined and addressed. The onus of responsibility for student performance does not reside solely with the students. This is a matter for all of us—parents, teachers, administrators, the Englewood community, as well as the students. We should ask pertinent questions. If no one has learned, then no one has taught. We cannot accept that everyone on the campuses, except the students, has stellar performance indicators. If the students have not acquired the knowledge in a manner that they own it and can synthesize it, then we have not taught them. This is a hard truth, but if we are finally going to be transparent and listen to the personnel on the frontlines, then we need to own up to this.

I submit this in all humility and with Much Love And Concern. text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-grhuf0bOdzw/YYcqQUS5YyI/AAAAAAAAQFc/6ID3lqnOl50qnQ0PgNC_BGjDFNiQwULjgCLcBGAsYHQ/image.png" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; I was given access to the opening page of the website and was told, there you go, commence monitoring the children's progress. It took half a school year to get the Administration to understand that the only tab on the page that worked for me was the one labeled "Logout". So in effect, I was given access to the opening page and nothing else. Near the end of the 2019-20 school year, the then Superintendent finally gave me access.

The School year 2020-21 may have been horrible for other parents, but it was better for this one. The older child exceeded expectations, because I could monitor her. The younger child was still suffering from the shock of being thrown into a Virtual World with one Teacher and waking up, the next school year, in a Virtual World with 7 Teachers. He was placed in Honors Classes. We never requested this. After 3 weeks of struggling, he commented that having 7 teachers who all gave an assignment everyday was driving him crazy. I could see that it was. It was impossible to help him. He would not accept, nor participate in a discussion of what the problem was. He refused help from me, Guidance and his teachers. His work only improved a tiny bit after he was finally placed in mainstream classes. Part of him remained in the Honors Classes as he continued to communicate with his former classmates privately via Teams Chat.

Added to this problem was the fact that Teams, which was created for businesses has a Social Media Platform as part of it. The Social Media Platform is called "Private Chat". Teachers do not control Private Chat. After much searching, many emails and telephone calls, it was determined that no one in District seemed to understand that this Private Chat Feature could be turned off completely. It could also be left up to the Teacher whether of not to keep it on. Mind you, children could communicate 24 hours a day through this feature. Teachers cannot see the conversations in this Private Chat Room. This means that students may carry on Private Conversations without Supervision of any adult. Not enough energy was spent on trying to solve this problem. I was NEVER satisfied with any of the answers from EPSD regarding this problem. It should also be noted here that Teams offers students the option of being able to contact persons outside of their grade and their schools. I have witnessed this myself. In my ventures inside Teams, I have noticed that this young one was invited to contact students in the high school.

I was told on various occasions that I should go into Teams and check out what was going on. I did this, and quite frankly, I wish I never had. I found conversations that I wish I could unsee. My excursion into his Private Chat world caused problems that he called "an invasion of his privacy". We had verbal battles concerning this invasion of his privacy. Private Chat is still on. Students are sitting in class behind barriers unable to see classmates as they look from right to left, unless they lean back and peer around the barriers. Why? It seems the Administration allowed a Custodian to choose the barriers that sit on the students' desks. These barriers are white and are not transparent to the right and to the left. This leaves the student inside a box able to see straight ahead and into the screen of their laptops. The Teacher is competing with a device that is supposed to be helping them. This is cruel and unusual punishment for both student and teacher. Students should be able to see each other and see the Teacher as she/he moves about the room as demonstrated in this short video where a Superintendent tests the shield in a classroom.

Students are sitting at desks, behind partitions, wearing masks, unable to see their classmates, looking into the screen of a laptop. Please rate this learning environment.

So now there are students who are watching videos, television, surfing the net and conversing in Private Chat while the teacher is trying to teach a class. Some of you might think that the teacher can control this. Think again. Imagine yourself in the same situation. How would you control it?

So, those of you out there talking about how students are falling behind, please.

Meanwhile, you, School Board members are still conducting Board Meetings on Zoom. You say that more parents may attend, and are attending. You cannot prove that by me. I do see that you are less tolerant of each other than when you were seated at that long table in person. There a hundreds of School Boards around the state and the country who are meeting in person and still streaming to tax payers at home. Figure it out, you have an entire department of capable Tech people who know how to do this. Use them for their strengths. Learn something from the Techies.

Why not this one, with a mask? For my taxes, they could also lose the laptop in class or minimize the use of this tool. Did no one consider that all of the distractions available on the laptop may be transporting students away from the realm of teaching and learning?

Students should be able to see each other. For many years, we have been teaching them to think outside the box. Now we have put them inside one. Why are we expecting them to produce their best work?

...And how are the children?

plumwalk2http://www.blogger.com/profile/17454293763847871950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-717994841160382030.post-15464122102897194202021-10-21T18:34:00.002-07:002021-10-21T19:35:06.664-07:00...And How Are the Children?
Our BOE has spent more than 10 years trying to put an electronic sign @DMHS. The Christmas Angel Tree generates loads of smiles at a time of year when many are depressed and feeling alone. She also takes a special interest in the elderly. She is a single Mother who gives of her soul and her time to those in need. I was not surprised to learn that she was on the forefront of the recovery effort first thing in the morning after Hurricane Ida tore through our City. I was totally disgusted with that comment, because a lot of people did a lot of work to bring about those results. Some of us had been in the streets going house to house and having Campaign events for several months. Calling the results a blip negated all of our hard work.

We held a People's Town Hall. It was a Survival Summit focusing on Solutions, not complaints. We held a very engaging and wonderfully rewarding event that should be replicated sometime in the future. It was called, "The Woman's Day of Action". We called upon all women in the City to come together and walk with us in the 4th Ward. The objective was to go house to house in Englewood's 4th Ward encouraging Residents to vote and letting them know that we cared about them and their children.

There was a general impression going around that 4th Ward Residents do not ever vote. Little attention was given to the fact that we had/have the lowest number of registered voters in the City. We decided to test the theory of naysayers who claimed that 4th Ward Residents did not care about their kids and therefore felt no need to vote, attend PTO meetings, Back To School Nights, Parent Conferences or any other event that involved their children. It was a get to know your neighbor day. We wanted to make sure that every family in the 4th Ward was aware of how much they were needed and that they could do something to change their children's educational world.

We paired off Teachers from all over the County with Parents and other Residents. We gave them addresses of registered voters and sent them off with their assigned streets. I was paired off with the vibrant young lady in the middle of that photo. We covered a lot of ground, rang a lot of doorbells and had conversations with the most unlikely people. I learned a lot about Carol Feinstein and the City of Englewood on that fateful day. Not one door was closed to us. Happy faces greeted us at the doorway wondering why their former teacher, or the former teacher of their mom, dad, or child was standing at their door. There were families cooking out in their yards with no thought to voting who slapped their foreheads and said, "yes, of course", they were going to vote. The general consensus was that the People were left feeling really good that they had gotten a visit that day. It showed on Election Day. Across the 4th Ward Parents, Teachers and other Residents had similar stories."

It did surprise everyone in town that we got all three Candidates elected. It was not a good time for Education in Englewood. Over 100 support staff, many who lived in the 4th Ward, had been laid off in 2012 when the positions of Secretary and Paraprofessional (Teacher's Aide) had been abolished. We learned a lot about how that "job action" of Outsourcing these positions had impacted the 4th Ward and low income families. The impact has not gone away and the District has still not shown that any money was saved.

In April 2013, the "Pro Outsourcing" Board Members still outnumbered our grass roots Candidates. It took only 5 School Board Members to move the School Board Elections to November where they have been lost in Partisanship ever since. The Pro Outsourcing Board even took a vote in the very first meeting to block 2 of our newly elected Board Members from voting on Personnel issues. This happened in April of 2013, before the end of the month in which the so called blip occurred. Very much the same way Mitch McConnell handcuffed Barak Obama, the Pro Outsourcing Members handcuffed 2 of the newly elected Board Members on the issue of Personnel. There have been no more blips since then. Did the General Election's Partisan atmosphere do what many projected it would?

Did 528 School Districts save money and increase the number of voters participating in School Board Elections or did they immerse Public Education into a Political and Partisan mire in which there is no chance to recover?

This Grandmother was very glad to see 2 Ballots when I opened that envelope and learned that the Partisan Election had been separated on paper, at least.

plumwalk2http://www.blogger.com/profile/17454293763847871950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-717994841160382030.post-34828330285615046022020-09-17T22:33:00.015-07:002020-10-03T19:19:00.473-07:00Vote Column 4, Because you Deserve More

Englewood Students, Parents and Administrators need Board Members who will never give up the fight for Educational Excellence for all students regardless of race, class, where they live or the economic status of their parents. My open letter to EPSD about The Zone.

Please share.

I am writing to urge you to take decisive action, to lead--and find a way to support The Zone for the 2020-2021 school year. Now is not a time to reduce the mental health and community supports for students and faculty.

I understand that Trenton is in crisis and has no good choices to make. However, Trenton does not know what we know, which is that Englewood Public Schools were in crisis before the pandemic. I know this because through the leadership of Mariam Gerges and Liz Corsini, along with Sanetta Ponton, I helped lead hours of workshops for DMHS faculty and administrators last year.

We heard first hand how difficult the conditions in the school were, their struggles in reaching students, and their desire to lead their colleagues in creating a better climate in which students, regardless of their traumas, could learn and thrive. We were having these conversations and workshops in August, September, January and February. What will those discussions sound like over Zoom this year?

I can assure you that the kind of professional development and coaching that your faculty and administrators received last year through these workshops would have cost EPSD thousands of dollars--but you got it "free" from Bergen Family Center, The Zone and the community members like Sanetta, Flat Rock Brook and me--who will do almost anything for Englewood's children. Most importantly, EPSD got all this expertise for "free" because the community knows the value that Bergen Family Center brings--and when called upon by them, we show up.

Now it is time for EPSD to show up for The Zone. I assure you that your students and faculty cannot survive, let alone thrive, without the support that The Zone and its committed staff provide. They pivoted seamlessly to the virtual world, and connected with students in a matter of days. In fact, there were moments on the weekly community calls that Sanetta organized, when it became obvious that Bergen Family Center knew more about some of EPSD students than the district did itself. You need The Zone, we all know you do.

These 2 projects will bring in probably a minimum of 400 people, many of whom, if not most, will NOT be people of color. Now, let me be clear, this is significant because people of color have distinct wants and needs from leadership (on all levels) that stem from their experiences in this country. Thank God for these organizations because many would not eat without them. I am concerned however that I don’t not hear any leadership acknowledging the fact that, off my rough calculation, close to 2000 meals are being given out each week indicates we have a real problem with poverty in Englewood.
